Dr. Kelly is a medical geneticist who has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics since 1982. In 1993 she became a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. She received her Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1971. Her initial work focused on genetic counseling for reproductive decisions and led to her book, Dealing with Dilemma: A Manual for Genetic Counselors (New York, Springer-Verlag, 1977).
F
or over twenty-five years Dr. Kelly has specialized in Cancer Risk Assessment and Counseling, making use of information from medicine, genetics, and epidemiology to analyze hereditary and non-hereditary cancer risks, and to communicate these risks to concerned individuals and their families in a thoughtful, thorough manner. She is the author of Assess Your True Risk of Breast Cancer (New York, Henry Holt and Company, 2000), and Understanding Breast Cancer Risk (Philadelphia, Temple University Press, 1991), and of numerous articles on Cancer Risk Assessment and Counseling. She is particularly interested in developing effective ways to integrate cancer risk information into general medical practice and to communicate changing, technical information to individuals from different backgrounds and with differing perspectives.
In recent years Dr. Kelly has offered Cancer Risk Assessment training programs and consultations to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. These programs and consultations provide practical training for health professionals as well as effective educational materials for use with patients and other concerned individuals.
Dr. Kelly has a private Cancer Risk Assessment and Counseling practice in the San Francisco Bay Area.
